Values

In this text, I will reflect on values.
The film I have chosen as my main focus, is “Drone” because I think the theme also concerns Norway and the rest of the world.

The word 'value' has a wide meaning. Things that are important to us in life, has a value. It can be everything from a car, a house or money to religion, community, family and freedom. The difference are the physical values we need to survive and abstract values that makes us to who we are. Things has different values from individual to individual.

In the film “Drone”, the talk about abstract values and it as an ethical dilemma. Many civilians and children are killed in the mission to kill people associated to al-Qaida. On one hand, it is positive that they take the responsibility to take the terrorist and try to defeat terrorism. On the other hand, it isn’t right to defeat terrorism with terrorism. And as mentioned, many civilians and children are killed.

The drone pilots are also exposed to an ethical dilemma. Is it ethical right to sit in one place on earth, and bomb a country on the other side? The positive about this, is that they do not risking their own life.  The negative side, the country that are being attacked, don’t have the change to defeat themselves.  At the same time, the pilots don’t get the feeling of war, and therefore it is hard for them to realize what they actual are doing.

I think that values are important, because it forms a good society and you as a person. It is essential to find values that is important in life, because values defines you as a person and it helps you to make up some meanings about the society and to fit in the society. People with some of the same values, forms a good society.

To conclude, values are important in many settings, from religion to war and politics. Values forms a good society, and values  is an ethical dilemma in many settings

What is it about America that is American?

Viewpoints p.155

  1. Not all of these values is uniquely American, because they apply to other countries as well. For example individualism or the freedom for the individual. These values gives ability to decide over your own life and what you would do with it. Norwegians and many others has the same freedom.
  2. I think the Norwegian media sometimes present the American people like unhealthy and stupid, but other times as outgoing and inclusive people.
  3. I think values like friendliness, individualism and hospitality is very important. That makes other people to feel welcome and included.
  4. I think some of my values have some different backgrounds. Some of them comes from the Norwegian culture and traditions, but others comes from my family and the way I have been raised.
